Frequently asked questions for the Cosmetology Clock-Hour Certificate program.

Admission to the Cosmetology Program occurs in the fall only. Admission is limited to keep classes small and student-focused. Prospective students should submit an application and attend a mandatory info session as early as possible. Acceptance to the program is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once full capacity is reached, applicants may opt to be placed on a wait list. Wait listed applicants are accepted on a seat-available basis only.

The Cosmetology program is a 1000 clock-hour program approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Cosmetology. The fall-starting Cosmetology program starts in September and runs through the following spring semester. 

The Cosmetology program is offered at the Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical School, 565 Maple Street, Hathorne, MA 01937

The Cosmetology program is full-time. Students enrolled in the program attend classes Monday thru Friday from 4:00-10:00 p.m. daily. Monday & Friday classes online, Tuesday-Thursday face-to-face.

The Cosmetology courses include theory, practice and hands-on instruction. Hairstyling, skincare, manicuring and makeup are all covered.

The cost is approximately $9,800 (subject to change). Your cosmetology kit and smock is included in this price.

Yes, there are additional costs for the textbooks, required clothing/shoes, and field trips. There are also additional fees associated with the Mass State Board licensing written and practical examinations.

Students who apply to the program must possess a high school diploma or GED and attend a Mandatory Information Session to apply to this program. In addition, students are required to take the Computerized Placement Tests (CPTs) PRIOR to Registration.  Although there are no required score levels, these tests provide important information about skills in reading, writing, English and mathematics and may be used for advising purposes. 

There is a mandatory dress code that includes black scrub pants, black v-neck scrub top and black shoes. These are out-of-pocket costs.

The Cosmetology program is eligible for financial aid. Students should contact the Student Financial Services office for further information and assistance.

Each student needs to take the entire program which covers theory, practice and hands-on, including instructions in haircutting and make-up, as well as all other areas of cosmetology.

Yes, the Nail Tech program is a 100 clock-hour program. It is approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Cosmetology. Information about the Nail Tech program can be found on the college's web site under Academic, Noncredit Programs of Study.
