NSCC Criminal Justice Professor Rachel Roesler has a passion for teaching students about the U.S. legal system.  To that extent and in order to better communicate with and teach her students whose first language is not English, Rachel will be embarking on a Spanish immersion sabbatical this fall.

She will be traveling to Nicaragua and Costa Rica, taking daily Spanish classes, and will be volunteering with local organizations that are working to improve the lives of local Nicaraguans.

One of those organizations is the Newton-San Juan Del Sur Sister Project where she will be participating in the “EcoStove” project, assisting with the production and installing of smoke-free cooking stoves in the homes of the rural poor, who typically cook over an open flame and inhale harmful smoke.

Rachel will also be volunteering at the Free High School for Adults and has been creating lesson plans to teach Nicaraguan adult learners about the U.S. legal system, the three branches of Government and the Electoral College.
