The New Orleans Drawing Project Is a ten-year initiative to document the recovery of post-Katrina New Orleans through on-site drawings made throughout the city from 2006-2016. This project was a way for him to respond to the hurricane disaster that crippled New Orleans, where he taught in the public schools through Teach for America. Jeffrey Marshall is a Gloucester, Massachusetts artist, and currently teaches in the Early College Program at NSCC, as well as Merrimack College and Slow River Studio. These drawings provide an alternative document to the dominant photographic record that has been the primary narrative of the disaster.

The exhibition: Jeffrey Marshall, Looking for Hope: The New Orleans Drawing Project, 2006-2016 currently includes 9 large scale drawings, 9 mid-size, 17 smaller pieces, 7 small paintings, and 3 sketchbooks, along with a strong narrative component that creates the historical context for the work. Parts of the work have been exhibited at The Aspen Museum of Art, The Boston Center for the Arts, The University of Rhode Island, Endicott College, and The New England Institute of Art, and Matthew Swift Gallery among others. Press has included The New York Times, Art New England, and Artscope Magazine. Jeffrey primarily exhibits in non-profit spaces where contact with the public through workshops and lectures are part of the programming. He feels that the dialogue with viewers is an extension of the work.
At his lecture on April 13, Prof Marshall will focus on the historical context of hurricane Katrina, and the experience of drawing in a disaster zone.
