The Influence of Historical Dutch Art on Van Gogh

Especially in his portraits of the Roulin family, Van Gogh turned to the work of Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and other Dutch artists who came before him. Learn how Van Gogh drew inspiration from 17th-century Dutch art, pulling from it models for how to approach portraiture as a genre and how to create a distinctive pictorial style. Alcohol ink on tile is a fun and creative activity that can bring out vibrant and unique pieces of art. It’s easy to get started and allows for a lot of personal expression. Alcohol inks create beautiful, fluid patterns that are completely one-of-a-kind with each project - no art experience is necessary! Working with alcohol inks can be calming and enjoyable, so relax, unwind, and let the colors flow!
Floral Design Workshop

Join the Floral Design Certificate Program’s “Designing in Spring” - You’ll be learning the basics of floral design while creating a fabulous spring bouquet to take home and enjoy. 19th Century Dutch Artists

Discuss the social and cultural climate that inspired Dutch artists of the 19th century, as well as their complex relationship to art of the past. Although they had a deep veneration for earlier figures such as Rembrandt, they were also firmly committed to a more modern approach that paved the way for a figure like Van Gogh. 3D Model Making Workshop
Thursday, April 24th at 2pm
NSCC is staging a 3D model making workshop in conjunction with Arts in April and the
NSCC Players' spring production, The Bogeyman's Ball, conceived and directed by Matthew
Woods.
Professors Bonnie Ashmore, Jeffrey Marshall, and Dermot Smyth will be on hand on to
assist model makers through the process of creating 3D clay art models. There are
20 spots available, and the workshop will be FREE. Signups are first-come, first served. To reserve your spot, please email Dermot Smyth (dsmyth@northshore.edu). Spots will go quickly, so please sign up as soon as you can!
Calligraphy, Meet Street Art
Sunday, April 27 at 2pm at MFA Boston
Ubaydallah Ahmad and Ismael Muhammad Nieves might seem like very different artists. Muhammad is rooted in street art and imbeds narratives in his works that echoes graffiti’s love of letters. Ahmed was trained in Arabic-script calligraphy, including some of the earliest Arabic scripts found in Qurʾan manuscripts. But both artists are also Muslim and they think about what it means to be a Muslim artist, especially in public spaces—both in museums and galleries, but also in the streets.
