How do I know if I need to apply for IRB review?

Are you conducting research at NSCC? or using NSCC student, faculty/staff as subjects of research?

If the work

  • is conducted in established or commonly accepted educational settings, involving normal educational practices, such as (i) research on regular and special education instructional strategies, or (ii) research on the effectiveness of or the comparison among instructional techniques, curricula, or classroom management methods. or
  • is intended for limited or institutional use such as a class project or institutional research:

you do not need to apply for IRB review

If the work

  • is designed to test an hypothesis, permit conclusions to be drawn, and seeks to advance the generalizable knowledge of a field or
  • could be published or disseminated broadly

you should apply for IRB review.
