Students and instructors in our MassSTEP IT Training Program recently traveled to Mass General Brigham in Salem to meet with the head of the IT department. Employer site visits have been part of our MassSTEP program since its inception and allow students to explore various careers and work environments.
During the visit, students gained valuable insights into how IT is utilized in healthcare and its role in improving medical services and supporting technological innovation.
MassSTEP at NSCC is a 20-week free training program, open to students with or without a high school credential, that combines IT instruction with workplace readiness skills, and HiSET preparation. Earning industry certifications can help students land an entry-level position in IT by ensuring they know the basics of working with hardware, networks, and computer systems.
The MassSTEP IT Training Program at NSCC has served 105 individuals since 2018, with 88 students completing the program. One of those graduates was Otto Hernandez, who, prior to entering the program, was burning out at a job where he worked 70 hours a week. He made the life-altering decision to get his GED at Pathways in Lynn, then enrolled in NSCC’s free MassSTEP IT Training Program. Today, Otto works as a Computer Literacy Coach and a Digital Navigator. “It’s amazing, a dream where I am today,” said Otto. He recently came back to speak to and share his experiences with the current cohort of students in the MassSTEP IT Training Program. Otto’s story.
